In 1297 Šurany came to the Szegi family, a branch of the powerful Hont-Poznan clan, and between 1382 and 1401 they built a castle here. It was not a crag castle like the ones in the mountains, because the lowland has no crags — it was a rectangular fortified house, and what protected it was wet ground and the arms of the Nitra river. In 1403 the king granted it to Stibor of Stiborice, the Polish nobleman who was Sigismund of Luxembourg's most trusted man in the kingdom and who ended up holding a whole chain of castles along the Váh. A lowland castle is a reminder that water can be a wall.Roku 1297 získala Šurany rodina Szegiovcov, vetva mocného rodu Hont-Poznanovcov, a v rokoch 1382 – 1401 tu postavila hrad. Nebol to skalný hrad ako v horách, veď na rovine skaly nie sú — bol to opevnený štvorcový dom a chránila ho mokrá pôda a ramená Nitry. Roku 1403 ho kráľ udelil Stiborovi zo Stiboríc, poľskému šľachticovi, ktorý bol najdôveryhodnejším mužom Žigmunda Luxemburského v kráľovstve a nazhromaždil celú reťaz hradov pozdĺž Váhu. Nížinný hrad pripomína, že aj voda vie byť hradbou.
