Šurany appears for the first time in a surviving document on 3 September 1138, in a charter of King Béla II, written there as villa Suran — 'the village of Suran'. That is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived: the Zámeček site a few kilometres away shows they had been here for thousands of years already. In 1220 the village passed out of church hands into royal ones. Charters like this one are almost the only written source we have for ordinary villages in this century, which is why so many Slovak places date their history from a piece of parchment.Prvý raz sa Šurany objavujú v zachovanej listine 3. septembra 1138, v listine kráľa Bela II., kde stoja ako villa Suran — dedina Šurany. Je to údaj o listine, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žijú: Zámeček pár kilometrov odtiaľ ukazuje, že tu boli už tisícročia. Roku 1220 prešla dedina z cirkevných rúk do kráľovských. Takéto listiny sú pre bežné dediny v tomto storočí takmer jediným písomným prameňom — a preto si toľko slovenských obcí odvodzuje svoje dejiny od kúska pergamenu.
