Šurany lies on the Nitra river in the Danubian Lowland, a short distance north of Nové Zámky. The storyHistória
A fortress stood here in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as part of the defensive line against the Ottomans, working alongside Nové Zámky. It was demolished after the wars ended and nothing of it survives above ground.V 16. a 17. storočí tu stála pevnosť ako súčasť obrannej línie proti Osmanom, ktorá spolupracovala s Novými Zámkami. The town's modern history begins with the sugar refinery: beet processing arrived in the nineteenth century and shaped the town's economy, its railway connections and its population for more than a hundred years.Novodobé dejiny mesta sa začínajú cukrovarom: spracovanie repy sem prišlo v 19. storočí a vyše sto rokov formovalo hospodárstvo mesta, jeho železničné spojenia aj obyvateľstvo.

The parish church, the town museum in a former manor building, and the memorial in the centre are the short circuit. The town's real interest for a visitor is as a base: the Nitra river's oxbows and the wetlands around them are good birdwatching, and the surrounding villages preserve traditional lowland architecture.Farský kostol, mestské múzeum v bývalej kúrii a pamätník v centre tvoria krátky okruh.
