Once the Ottoman frontier reached the lowland the old castle was no longer enough, and it was rebuilt as a modern fort — first in 1556, then in a larger programme between 1559 and 1567, for which the villagers of the whole county were made to do the digging. Šurany was one link in a chain of forts strung along the Nitra and the Danube. From 1580 the strongest link in that chain was Nové Zámky, ten kilometres downstream. For the next hundred and fifty years the history of the two towns is one history.Keď sa k nížine priblížila osmanská hranica, starý hrad už nestačil a prestavali ho na modernú pevnosť — najprv roku 1556, potom v rokoch 1559 – 1567 vo väčšom, pričom kopať museli poddaní z celej stolice. Šurany boli jedným ohnivkom v reťazi pevností natiahnutej pozdĺž Nitry a Dunaja. Od roku 1580 bolo najsilnejším ohnivkom tejto reťaze desať kilometrov po prúde ležiace Nové Zámky.
