For four centuries the Danube here was the northern edge of the Roman Empire. Everything on the far bank belonged to the province of Pannonia, with a military road and a chain of forts along it — the fort of Solva stood where Esztergom is now. Everything on this bank lay outside, in the land the Romans called barbaricum. But a frontier river is also a road: goods, coins and armies crossed in both directions, and Roman things travelled far north of the water. That double character — a line and a crossing at the same time — has been this place's story ever since.Dunaj tu štyri storočia tvoril severný okraj Rímskej ríše. Všetko na druhom brehu patrilo provincii Panónia s vojenskou cestou a reťazou táborov — tam, kde je dnes Ostrihom, stála pevnosť Solva. Všetko na tejto strane ležalo vonku, v krajine, ktorú Rimania nazývali barbarikum. Lenže hraničná rieka je zároveň cestou: tovar, mince aj vojská ňou prechádzali oboma smermi a rímske výrobky sa dostávali hlboko na sever od vody. Táto dvojakosť — hranica a prechod naraz — je príbehom tohto miesta dodnes.
