On the hill across the water, Esztergom became the seat of the first Hungarian rulers: Prince Géza held his court there, and his son Stephen — later Saint Stephen — was crowned king around the year 1000. That made the ferry on this bank part of the road to the kingdom's capital. The founding charter of the abbey at Hronský Beňadik, written in 1075, names the place on this side: Kokot, ten fishermen's houses and a few fields. It is the first written mention, and it tells you exactly what the settlement was — people who lived off the river and off taking other people across it.Na kopci za vodou sa Ostrihom stal sídlom prvých uhorských panovníkov: dvor tu mal knieža Gejza a jeho syn Štefan — neskorší svätý Štefan — bol okolo roku 1000 korunovaný za kráľa. Prievoz na tomto brehu sa tým stal súčasťou cesty do hlavného mesta kráľovstva. Zakladacia listina opátstva v Hronskom Beňadiku z roku 1075 miesto na našej strane pomenúva: Kokot, desať rybárskych domov a niekoľko polí. Je to prvá písomná zmienka a presne hovorí, čím osada bola — ľuďmi, ktorí žili z rieky a z prevážania iných cez ňu.
