The Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal host at Mohi in April 1241 and then had to stop at the Danube, which it could not cross. It waited. When the river froze at the turn of 1241 and 1242 the Mongols rode over the ice and burned Esztergom, the richest town in the kingdom; only the stone citadel on the hill held out. Kokot on this bank was a fishing village with no walls at all.
