Revolution and the awakeningRevolúcia a národné prebudenie
ŠaľaŠaľa
The revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom, which in a district of tenant farmers was the biggest single change in a thousand years. The following summer the war arrived on the doorstep: Hungarian troops under Artúr Görgei attacked across the Váh at Zsigárd, today Žihárec, on 16 June 1849, and fought the main battle at Pered — today Tešedíkovo, a few kilometres south of Šaľa — on 20 and 21 June. Šaľa itself was held as a position and changed hands during the fighting. Görgei lost, and he lost partly because 12,000 Russian soldiers under General Panyutin were fighting alongside the Austrians: Tsar Nicholas I had sent an army to help the Habsburgs crush the revolution, and Pered is one of the first places in Slovakia where those Russian troops decided a battle.
