Start in the pedestrian lower town and simply keep going uphill. The street narrows, loses its shops, turns to cobbles, and delivers you onto Pribinovo námestie — the quiet, shuttered heart of the Upper Town, with the bronze prince standing in the middle of it and the chapter houses closed around him like a held breath. The plague column is a few steps on. Then the ground drops away on either side and you are on the bridge across the dry moat, walking at the height of the rooftops you were standing among two minutes ago.Začnite v pešej zóne dolného mesta a jednoducho stúpajte. Ulica sa zúži, stratí obchody, zmení sa na dlažbu a vyklopí vás na Pribinovo námestie — tiché, okenicami zatvorené srdce Horného mesta, s bronzovým kniežaťom uprostred a kanonickými domami zovretými okolo neho ako zadržaný dych. Morový stĺp je na pár krokov ďalej. Potom sa terén po oboch stranách prepadne a vy stojíte na moste ponad suchú priekopu, vo výške striech, medzi ktorými ste pred dvoma minútami kráčali.
At the corner where the outer bastion turns beside the bridge, a stone giant is holding the wall up on his shoulders. That is Corgoň, and everyone stops. Through the gates after him the noise of the town cuts out entirely, and you come into a courtyard of plain white walls: the bishop's palace on one side, the seminary buildings and outbuildings on the other, and ahead of you the unassuming west front of a cathedral that is far stranger inside than out.Na nároží, kde sa vonkajšia bašta pri moste láme, drží kamenný obor múr na pleciach. To je Corgoň — a zastane pri ňom každý. Za bránami sa hluk mesta úplne vypne a vy vstúpite na nádvorie s hladkými bielymi múrmi: po jednej strane biskupský palác, po druhej seminárne a hospodárske budovy a priamo pred vami nenápadné západné priečelie katedrály, ktorá je zvnútra oveľa čudnejšia než zvonku.
Inside, you climb. The door lets you into the Lower Church, the wide Baroque space of the seventeenth century — vault, gilding, a marble relief over the altar. Steps take you up and through into the Upper Church, Gothic and taller and narrower, built in the fourteenth. Higher again and tucked at the top of the rock is the smallest room of the three: the Romanesque church of St Emmeram, the oldest core of all, walls thick out of all proportion to the space they enclose. Three churches, joined into one building on three levels, so that walking up is walking backwards through eight hundred years.Vnútri sa stúpa. Dvere vás vpustia do Dolného kostola, širokého barokového priestoru zo sedemnásteho storočia — klenba, zlátenie, mramorový reliéf nad oltárom. Schody vás vyvedú hore a ďalej do Horného kostola, gotického, vyššieho a užšieho, postaveného v štrnástom storočí. Ešte vyššie, pritisnutá na temene brala, je najmenšia z tých troch miestností: románsky Kostol svätého Emeráma, najstaršie jadro zo všetkého, s múrmi neúmerne hrubými na priestor, ktorý uzatvárajú. Tri kostoly spojené do jednej budovy na troch úrovniach — a tak je cesta hore zároveň cestou osemsto rokov späť.
Back outside, the ramparts give you the reason the rock was fortified in the first place. The Upper Town roofs are directly below; beyond them the river, the bridges and the flat lowland running south; behind you the wooded shoulder of Zobor filling the northern sky. Look north-east along the ridges of the Tribeč and you are looking toward Gýmeš, the region's other castle. Everything in the ring of villages around Nitra can be placed from up here.Vonku vám hradby ukážu dôvod, prečo sa toto bralo vôbec opevňovalo.
