Of all Slovakia’s castles, this is the one Nitra can call its own. Gýmeš stands on a wooded ridge of the Tribeč above the village of Jelenec, roughly a quarter of an hour’s drive north-east of the city — and then an hour on foot, because there is no other way up. What waits at the top is an unroofed forest ruin held by one family for six centuries: no ticket office, no café, no railings — just walls, oak trees, and gaps in the canopy that open out over the whole Nitra lowland.Zo všetkých slovenských hradov je práve tento ten, ktorý môže Nitra nazvať vlastným. Gýmeš stojí na zalesnenom hrebeni Tribeča nad obcou Jelenec, asi štvrťhodinu autom severovýchodne od mesta — a potom hodinu pešo, lebo inak sa hore nedostanete. Hore na vás čaká zrúcanina bez strechy uprostred lesa, ktorú jeden rod držal šesť storočí: žiadna pokladnica, žiadna kaviareň, žiadne zábradlia — len múry, duby a medzery v korunách, ktorými sa otvára celá Nitrianska nížina.
