Three Churches, One CathedralTri kostoly, jedna katedrála

Nitra begins on its rock. On a limestone spur above the old town, fortified long before there was a kingdom to fortify it for, Nitra Castle gathers a cathedral, a bishop's palace and a ring of bastions behind a single gate. You cross a bridge to reach it, with the Marian plague column standing watch outside the entrance; once you are through the gatehouse the city goes quiet behind you.Nitra sa začína na svojom brale. The Cathedral of St Emmeram is not one church but three, grown together over eight centuries and never quite reconciled. Oldest is the small Romanesque church of St Emmeram, pressed against the rock — thick walls, tiny windows, the plainest room on the hill. Beside it rises the Upper Church, Gothic and vertical, raised in the fourteenth century; below and at right angles lies the broad Lower Church, added in the seventeenth and finished in full Baroque, its vault a swirl of fresco and gilding. Walking the few steps between them, you change century twice without leaving the building.Katedrála svätého Emeráma nie je jeden kostol, ale tri — zrastené počas ôsmich storočí a dodnes celkom nezosúladené. Najstarší je malý románsky Kostol svätého Emeráma, pritisnutý k skale: hrubé múry, drobné okná, najstriedmejší priestor na celom kopci. Vedľa neho sa dvíha Horný kostol, gotický a vertikálny, postavený v štrnástom storočí; nižšie a naprieč leží široký Dolný kostol, pristavaný v sedemnástom storočí a dokončený v plnom baroku, s klenbou rozvírenou freskou a zlátením. Na pár krokoch medzi nimi dvakrát zmeníte storočie bez toho, aby ste opustili budovu.

The bishopric here was founded in 880 and is reckoned the oldest in Slovakia; the church that preceded it, consecrated for Prince Pribina around 828, is the first Christian church recorded anywhere on Slovak soil. The cathedral honours Saints Svorad and Beňadik, the hermits of Zobor, as patrons of the diocese, and the Diocesan Museum inside the castle complex sets out that long story in manuscripts, liturgical silver and finds from the hill itself. Immediately below the castle gate the ground levels into Pribinovo námestie, the quiet heart of the Upper Town. A bronze Prince Pribina stands at its centre, sword grounded, facing the church he is remembered for founding. Around him the square is lined with the Baroque and Classicist houses of the cathedral chapter — plastered in ochre and cream, shuttered, deliberately unbusy — and lanes run off between them toward the Franciscan church and the old seminary walls.Hneď pod hradnou bránou sa terén vyrovnáva do Pribinovho námestia, tichého srdca Horného mesta. Uprostred stojí bronzový knieža Pribina s mečom opretým o zem, obrátený k chrámu, pre ktorého založenie si ho pamätáme. Námestie okolo neho lemujú barokové a klasicistické kanonické domy — omietnuté do okrovej a krémovej, so zatvorenými okenicami, zámerne bez ruchu — a pomedzi ne odbočujú uličky k františkánskemu kostolu a k múrom starého seminára.

The Great Seminary a few steps away holds the Diocesan Library, one of the significant historic book collections in the country, built up by the bishops over centuries. Downhill, past the county house, the streets widen into the pedestrian lower town around Svätoplukovo námestie — cafés, the theatre, benches, and shoppers cutting through on their way home. Two squares, ten minutes apart, and completely different temperatures.Na pár krokov odtiaľ ukrýva Veľký seminár Diecéznu knižnicu, jeden z významných historických knižných fondov na Slovensku, ktorý biskupi budovali po stáročia. The Way of the Cross Above the CityKrížová cesta nad mestom

On the far side of the centre from Zobor, a second hill puts a church on the skyline. Kalvária is climbed by a Way of the Cross — stations set among the trees, one turn of the path at a time — and the walk up is the point of it as much as the summit. It has been a pilgrimage route for generations, and it is used as one still: on a spring evening you will pass people going up alone, unhurried, and coming down again in the dark.Na opačnej strane centra než Zobor stavia na obzor kostol druhý kopec. Na Kalváriu sa vystupuje po krížovej ceste — zastavenia sú rozmiestnené medzi stromami, vždy o jednu zákrutu chodníka ďalej — a samotné stúpanie je rovnako podstatné ako vrchol. Pútnickou cestou je už po generácie a ako pútnická cesta sa dodnes aj používa: za jarného večera stretnete ľudí, ktorí kráčajú hore sami, bez ponáhľania, a nadol sa vracajú už za tmy.

At the top stand the pilgrimage church and the Mission House of the Society of the Divine Word, the missionary congregation whose Slovak home this has long been. Its Mission Museum is one of the more unexpected collections in the country — masks, textiles, carvings, musical instruments, natural-history specimens, all of it carried back from mission fields in Africa, Asia and Latin America by men who went out from this hill above Nitra.Na vrchole stojí pútnický kostol a Misijný dom Spoločnosti Božieho Slova, misijnej kongregácie, ktorej je toto miesto už dlho slovenským domovom. Jej Misijné múzeum patrí k najprekvapivejším zbierkam na Slovensku — masky, textílie, rezby, hudobné nástroje aj prírodovedné exponáty, všetko privezené z misií v Afrike, Ázii a Latinskej Amerike mužmi, ktorí odchádzali práve z tohto kopca nad Nitrou.

And then there is the view. From the terrace below the church the city reads like a model: the castle rock and its cathedral tower in the middle distance, the river threading past it, the long green wall of Zobor closing the far side. If you only have time to look at Nitra from one place, this is the easier of the two candidates — and the better one at sunset, because the light is behind you.A potom je tu výhľad. A Theatre CityMesto divadla

Nitra carries more stage life than a city of its size normally manages. The Andrej Bagar Theatre, founded in the years after the Second World War and installed since the 1990s in a large modern building on the main square of the lower town, is one of Slovakia's principal repertory companies — classics, new Slovak writing and big-cast productions running in rotation through the season.Nitra unesie viac divadelného života, než sa mestu jej veľkosti obyčajne darí. In summer the programme moves outdoors to the city's amphitheatre for concerts and open-air cinema, and in late September Divadelná Nitra takes over every stage in town at once. The Nitra runs straight through the middle of everything, and the embankments either side of it are the city's real promenade — joggers before work, prams at lunchtime, and the long-distance Ponitrianska cyklomagistrála cycle route threading past on its way up and down the valley. Ride it out of town in either direction and within twenty minutes you are among fields, weirs and river willows.Rieka Nitra preteká priamo stredom všetkého a nábrežia po oboch jej stranách sú skutočnou mestskou promenádou — bežci pred prácou, kočíky napoludnie a popri nich Ponitrianska cyklomagistrála mieriaca hore i dolu údolím. In the centre, Sihoť is the park everyone means when they say "the park" — mature trees, gravel walks, benches, the sort of place a city only gets by leaving something alone for a hundred years. Out on the university side of the river, the botanical garden of the Slovak University of Agriculture keeps glasshouses and a planted collection that repays an hour easily. And behind all of it stands the hill country: the Zobor trails, the higher summit of Žibrica beyond it, and the wooded ridges of the Tribeč running north-east toward the ruins of the castle above Jelenec.V centre je Sihoť tým parkom, ktorý ľudia myslia, keď povedia „park“ — vzrastlé stromy, štrkové chodníky, lavičky, teda presne to, čo mesto získa iba tak, že sto rokov niečo nechá na pokoji.
