History of Hrušov CastleDejiny — Hrad Hrušov

Hrušov is a small castle on a rock in the middle of a forest, and its story is the ordinary one: built after the Mongols, sold off by the man paid to guard it, destroyed in a rebellion against the Habsburgs, forgotten for two centuries — and held up today by volunteers who carry every bag of lime up the hill.Hrušov je malý hrad na skale uprostred lesa a jeho príbeh je celkom obyčajný: postavili ho po Mongoloch, predal ho vlastný kastelán, zničila ho vzbura proti Habsburgovcom, dve storočia naň nikto nemyslel — a dnes ho držia hore dobrovoľníci, ktorí každé vrece vápna vynesú na chrbte.

  1. after 1241; first mentioned 1253po roku 1241; prvá zmienka 1253 Built where the road crosses the hillsPostavený tam, kde cesta prechádza cez kopce

The beginnings of Hrušov are not precisely known, but the building is dated to the years right after the Mongols withdrew, and the castle appears in a charter for the first time in 1253. It stands on a rock called Skalka, 482 metres up, above the old road across the Tribeč between the Nitra plain and the mining country of Tekov and the Hron. A garrison up there could see a column coming hours before it arrived, which was the entire point of the site. Here too the invasion of 1241 is the reason the castle exists, not the reason it fell: on this rock there was nothing for the Mongols to burn. Stojí na skale zvanej Skalka vo výške 482 metrov, nad starou cestou cez Tribeč medzi Nitrianskou nížinou a banským krajom Tekova a Pohronia.

  2. 1321–13471321 – 1347 Our castle HrušovNáš hrad Hrušov

For much of the Middle Ages Hrušov was a royal castle, run by a castellan — an officer who held it for the king without owning it. Between 1321 and 1344 it was in the hands of the lords of Levice. In 1347 King Louis the Great granted it to two men, Mikuláš and Ondrej, in a charter that calls it castrum nostrum Hurusov, our castle Hrušov: the king's Latin for a property he was in the act of giving away. Afterwards it returned to royal hands and to castellan rule again. Small castles like this changed owners constantly — that is normal, and it is why hardly any of them has one famous name attached to it.Veľkú časť stredoveku bol Hrušov kráľovským hradom, ktorý spravoval kastelán — úradník, čo hrad držal za kráľa, ale nevlastnil ho.

  3. c. 1446okolo roku 1446 The castellan sells the castleKastelán predá hrad

In 1439 King Albert died and left a baby as his heir, and for two decades the kingdom north of the Danube had no effective government. Castles were stormed, mortgaged and traded privately, and mercenary captains did as they liked. Around 1446 the castellan of Hrušov — the man employed to hold the place for its owners, the Bubek family — simply sold it to Koloman of Topoľčianky. Nothing shows what a weak crown does to a country better than an officer selling the fortress he was paid to guard.V roku 1439 zomrel kráľ Albrecht a dedičom nechal nemluvňa; kráľovstvo severne od Dunaja ostalo na dve desaťročia bez skutočnej vlády.

  4. 1526–16631526 – 1663 A small castle in a big warMalý hrad vo veľkej vojne

After the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526 and the Turks took Buda in 1541, the frontier crept north and every castle in this region was rebuilt for firearms. Hrušov was given a stone gate portal that still carries sixteenth-century work, and a cannon bastion on its southern side. In 1616 the whole estate was sold to Ladislav Pethe, because the Topoľčianky line that had held it died out. The war came closest in 1663, when the Ottomans took Nové Zámky and their raiding parties pushed deep into the Nitra region — but Hrušov was never an Ottoman conquest, and its end came out of a different war.

  5. 17081708 Destroyed in 1708 — and not by the TurksZničený v roku 1708 — a nie Turkami

For half a century Hungarian nobles rose again and again against the Habsburg emperors, over taxes, over troops quartered on their estates and over the treatment of Protestants. The last and largest of those risings was led from 1703 by Francis II Rákóczi. In 1708 Hrušov was captured and destroyed in that war and nobody ever rebuilt it; that was the year of the rebel defeat at Trenčín, after which the imperial army worked its way through the strongholds still holding out. Which side actually wrecked the castle is not stated by the sources this page could check. So when you are told the Turks destroyed Hrušov, here is the correction: Nové Zámky had been back in imperial hands since 1685, and this was a civil war inside the kingdom.

The village at the foot of the walk paid for how useful these hills were to partisans. On 30 August 1944, at the start of the Slovak National Uprising, two vehicles of Slovak soldiers arrived from Trenčín with weapons and about forty local men took up arms; Soviet-led partisan units, one of them some four hundred strong, spent the winter in these woods. In March 1945 the retreating German command needed the road through Skýcov and the partisans were in the way. On 15 March the people were driven out of their houses, and on 16 March 1945 the village was burned: 262 houses destroyed, six buildings left standing — the church, the presbytery, the school and three houses the Germans were using. Thirteen villagers did not survive the war; the rest rebuilt the village from nothing between 1945 and 1950.Za to, ako sa tieto hory hodili partizánom, zaplatila dedina pod hradom. 30. augusta 1944, na začiatku Slovenského národného povstania, prišli do Skýcova dve autá slovenských vojakov z Trenčína so zbraňami a do zbrane sa postavilo asi štyridsať miestnych mužov; v okolitých horách prezimovali partizánske oddiely vedené sovietskymi dôstojníkmi, jeden z nich mal okolo štyristo ľudí. V marci 1945 potrebovalo ustupujúce nemecké velenie cestu cez Skýcov a partizáni mu stáli v ceste. 15. marca vyhnali ľudí z domov a 16. marca 1945 dedinu vypálili: zhorelo 262 domov, stáť ostalo šesť budov — kostol, fara, škola a tri domy, v ktorých bývali Nemci. Trinásť obyvateľov obce vojnu neprežilo a ostatní stavali dedinu odznova v rokoch 1945 až 1950.

  7. since about 2005približne od roku 2005 Rescued by handZachraňujú ho ručne

For the better part of two centuries Hrušov was known to foresters and to almost nobody else. Since about 2005 the civic association Leustach — its full name means the association for the rescue of the medieval architectural heritage of the Nitra region — has worked on the ruin every season, mostly with hand tools carried up the hill. The sixteenth-century gate portal and the approach bridge were finished in 2026, and the inside of the southern cannon bastion is the current job. No road has ever reached Hrušov and none ever will, so every bag of lime that goes into these walls goes up on somebody's back.Takmer dve storočia poznali Hrušov iba horári a nikto iný.
