For much of the Middle Ages Hrušov was a royal castle, run by a castellan — an officer who held it for the king without owning it. Between 1321 and 1344 it was in the hands of the lords of Levice. In 1347 King Louis the Great granted it to two men, Mikuláš and Ondrej, in a charter that calls it castrum nostrum Hurusov, our castle Hrušov: the king's Latin for a property he was in the act of giving away. Afterwards it returned to royal hands and to castellan rule again. Small castles like this changed owners constantly — that is normal, and it is why hardly any of them has one famous name attached to it.Veľkú časť stredoveku bol Hrušov kráľovským hradom, ktorý spravoval kastelán — úradník, čo hrad držal za kráľa, ale nevlastnil ho. V rokoch 1321 až 1344 patril pánom z Levíc. V roku 1347 ho kráľ Ľudovít Veľký daroval Mikulášovi a Ondrejovi listinou, ktorá ho označuje ako castrum nostrum Hurusov, teda náš hrad Hrušov — kráľovská latinčina pre majetok, ktorého sa panovník práve vzdával. Potom sa hrad vrátil do kráľovských rúk a opäť pod správu kastelánov. Malé hrady menili majiteľov neustále; je to bežné a je to aj dôvod, prečo takmer žiadny z nich nemá jedno slávne meno.
