From 1554 to 1594 Veľký Krtíš was tributary to the Ottomans and counted into the sanjak administered from Szécsény, in the part of Novohrad the empire held. A village this size had no walls, no garrison and no choice. Raiding parties crossed the Ipeľ hills through most of the sixteenth century, and a year's work could be carried off by either army — which is why the frontier decades left this country not with ruins but with empty villages.V rokoch 1554 – 1594 bol Veľký Krtíš poplatný Osmanom a rátal sa do sandžaku spravovaného zo Sečian, v tej časti Novohradu, ktorú ríša držala. Dedina takejto veľkosti nemala hradby, posádku ani na výber. Lúpežné oddiely prechádzali ipeľskými vrchmi väčšinu šestnásteho storočia a celoročnú prácu jej mohlo odviezť ktorékoľvek z vojsk — preto po pohraničných desaťročiach nezostali v tomto kraji ruiny, ale prázdne dediny.
