On 5 September 1874 the railway up the Rimava valley from Jesenské opened as far as Tisovec, running through Hnúšťa on the way. In 1881 the valley's ironworks were absorbed into the Rimamurány–Salgótarján company, and in 1885 that company built its first coke blast furnace at Likier, today part of Hnúšťa. Coke instead of charcoal was the whole nineteenth-century revolution in iron: it freed the furnaces from the forests, allowed them to be built far bigger, and meant that from then on works were sited where the transport was rather than where the wood was.5. septembra 1874 otvorili železnicu vedenú hore Rimavskou dolinou z Jesenského až do Tisovca; cestou prechádzala Hnúšťou.
