The valley's ironworking was a scatter of small owners, each with a hammer mill and a share of a forest, and by the early nineteenth century that was no longer enough to compete with larger works elsewhere. In 1811 they combined into a joint company, the Rimava Coalition, and Hnúšťa's importance grew with it; some sources date the coalition to 1808 instead.
