The Kysuce was one of the last corners of the kingdom to be settled, and it was settled by shepherds rather than by ploughmen. From the fifteenth century herders moved west along the Carpathian ridges under what was called Wallachian law — a lighter set of dues, paid in sheep and cheese instead of grain, which suited people living off grazing on ground where wheat will not ripen. Klubina, in 1535, is the first place in the Kysuce recorded as founded on that law; Čadca itself appears in writing for the first time in 1565, and in 1572 the estate register of Budatín lists it with a šoltýs — the hereditary headman who recruited the settlers and kept a share of what they cleared. The name is usually explained from the old word čadiť, to give off smoke, because a farm here had to be burned and cut out of the forest before it was a farm at all. Notice the wording: 1565 is the date of a document, not the date people arrived.Kysuce patrili k posledným kútom kráľovstva, ktoré sa osídlili — a osídlili ich pastieri, nie oráči. Od pätnásteho storočia sa pastieri presúvali karpatskými hrebeňmi na západ podľa takzvaného valaského práva: miernejších povinností, ktoré sa odvádzali ovcami a syrom namiesto obilia a vyhovovali ľuďom živiacim sa pasením tam, kde pšenica nedozreje. Klubina je z roku 1535 prvou lokalitou na Kysuciach, o ktorej vieme, že vznikla na tomto práve; samotná Čadca sa v písomnostiach objavuje prvý raz roku 1565 a v roku 1572 ju budatínsky urbár uvádza so šoltýsom — dedičným richtárom, ktorý zháňal osadníkov a mal podiel z toho, čo vyklčovali. Meno sa zvyčajne vysvetľuje zo slova čadiť, dymiť: gazdovstvo tu bolo treba najprv vypáliť a vyrúbať z lesa, aby vôbec bolo gazdovstvom. Všimnite si formuláciu: rok 1565 je dátumom listiny, nie dátumom príchodu ľudí.
