In 1563 František Thurzó bought the estate and between 1571 and 1574 replaced the old water castle with a Renaissance house; his son Juraj Thurzó added the free-standing Wedding Palace in 1601 and in 1609 was elected palatine of Hungary, the highest office below the king. For about fifty years Bytča was therefore not a provincial market town at all but one of the working centres of the kingdom, with couriers, lawyers and petitioners coming up the valley to a house on the Váh. The town paid for the honour as well: in 1605, during Štefan Bocskai's rising against the Habsburgs, hajdúk irregulars sacked Bytča and the buildings had to be repaired for years afterwards. When Thurzó died here on 24 December 1616, the town lost the one thing that had made it important.Roku 1563 kúpil panstvo František Turzo a v rokoch 1571 – 1574 nahradil starý vodný hrad renesančným sídlom; jeho syn Juraj Turzo k nemu roku 1601 pristavil samostatný Sobášny palác a roku 1609 ho zvolili za uhorského palatína, čo bol najvyšší úrad hneď po kráľovi. Asi päťdesiat rokov teda Bytča nebola vidieckym mestečkom, ale jedným z pracovných centier kráľovstva — do domu na Váhu chodili hore dolinou poslovia, právnici a prosebníci. Mesto si za tú česť aj priplatilo: roku 1605, počas povstania Štefana Bočkaja proti Habsburgovcom, ho vyplienili hajdúsi a budovy sa potom roky opravovali. Keď tu 24. decembra 1616 Turzo zomrel, mesto stratilo jedinú vec, ktorá z neho robila dôležité miesto.
