The name first appears in a document of 1234, as terra Bycha, the land of Bycha; some Slovak sources give 1250 instead, which is an ordinary sort of disagreement when the evidence is a single charter. That is a fact about a piece of parchment, not about when people arrived — this stretch of the Váh is flat, watered, workable ground and had been farmed long before anyone wrote anything down about it. What the document does tell you is that by the thirteenth century the land belonged to somebody important enough to have his rights recorded in Latin. Everything that follows in Bytča's history comes out of that: it was always somebody's estate, never a free royal town.Meno sa prvý raz objavuje v listine z roku 1234 v podobe terra Bycha, teda zem Byča; niektoré slovenské pramene uvádzajú namiesto toho rok 1250, čo je pri jedinej listine celkom bežný rozpor. Je to fakt o kuse pergamenu, nie o tom, kedy sem prišli ľudia — tento úsek Váhu je rovina s vodou a dobrou pôdou a obrábal sa dávno predtým, než o ňom niekto čokoľvek napísal. Listina však hovorí niečo iné: v trinástom storočí patrila táto zem niekomu natoľko dôležitému, že si dal svoje práva zapísať po latinsky. Z toho vychádza celá ďalšia história Bytče — bola vždy niečím panstvom, nikdy slobodným kráľovským mestom.
