The village of Súľov is recorded from 1193. The castle is younger, and here the trouble begins: one Slovak account says it arose in the thirteenth century to guard the road below, while another says it is first mentioned in 1336, when King Charles Robert granted it to the ancestors of the family who took their name from the place — the Súľovský family. Both cannot be the first mention, and neither entry explains where its date came from. What is not in doubt is why anyone built up here at all. The ground breaks into a maze of conglomerate — a pudding-stone of rounded pebbles set in a sandy matrix — weathered into towers, needles and gates, and a wall built onto one of those towers only has to be a wall on one or two sides.Dedina Súľov je doložená od roku 1193. Hrad je mladší a tu sa začínajú problémy: jedno slovenské heslo hovorí, že vznikol v 13. storočí na ochranu cesty pod ním, druhé uvádza ako prvú zmienku rok 1336, keď ho kráľ Karol Róbert daroval predkom rodu, ktorý si podľa miesta dal meno — Súľovským. Obidva údaje nemôžu byť prvou zmienkou a ani jedno heslo nevysvetľuje, odkiaľ svoj dátum vzalo. O čom však pochybnosti nie sú, je dôvod, prečo sem vôbec niekto staval. Terén sa tu láme na bludisko zlepenca — pudingového kameňa z okrúhlych okruhliakov spojených piesčitým tmelom — zvetraného na veže, ihly a brány, a múr postavený na jednu z tých veží musí byť múrom len z jednej či dvoch strán.
