The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie
Strečno CastleHrad Strečno
In the middle of the sixteenth century Mikuláš and František Dersffy rebuilt Strečno for a new kind of war: heavier walls, positions for guns, and a Renaissance residence behind them, because cannon had made tall medieval walls a liability. It is worth saying plainly what that rebuilding was not for. After the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526 the Ottoman frontier settled across the south of the country, roughly two hundred kilometres from here, and no Ottoman army ever fought for the Strečno gorge. The story that this castle "fell to the Turks" is told in a great many Slovak villages, and here it is simply not true — what threatened the Váh valley came from inside the kingdom.V polovici šestnásteho storočia prestavali Mikuláš a František Dersffyovci Strečno pre nový spôsob vojny: ťažšie múry, delové postavenia a za nimi renesančné sídlo, lebo delá spravili z vysokých stredovekých hradieb skôr príťaž než ochranu. To, čo Považie naozaj ohrozovalo, prichádzalo zvnútra kráľovstva.
