In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army crossed the Carpathians, destroyed the Hungarian king's army at the river Slaná and spent a year burning its way across the kingdom. King Béla IV survived, and his conclusion was blunt: wooden forts and earth banks were useless, so the kingdom had to be rebuilt in stone on ground that was hard to reach. Most of the Slovak castles you can visit today are the result of that decision. Strečno is not — not yet. In 1241 this rock carried nothing; the gorge was watched from the other bank, from the older castle now called Starhrad, and Strečno's turn came a good seventy years later.Na jar 1241 prekročilo mongolské vojsko Karpaty, pri rieke Slanej rozdrvilo vojsko uhorského kráľa a rok pálilo krajinu od jedného konca na druhý. Kráľ Belo IV. to prežil a jeho záver bol jednoznačný: drevené hradiská a valy sú na nič, kráľovstvo treba prestavať z kameňa a na ťažko dostupných miestach. Väčšina slovenských hradov, ktoré dnes navštívite, je výsledkom tohto rozhodnutia. Strečno zatiaľ nie. Roku 1241 na tomto brale nestálo nič; tiesňavu strážili z druhého brehu, zo staršieho hradu, ktorému dnes hovoríme Starhrad — a na Strečno prišiel rad o dobrých sedemdesiat rokov neskôr.
