Strečno turns up in a written record for the first time in 1316, in the years when Matúš Čák of Trenčín controlled most of what is now western and northern Slovakia and answered to nobody, least of all the king. Being first mentioned in 1316 is a fact about a document, not about when the first stone was laid — but the purpose of the place is not hidden in that document. Below the castle was a ford and a toll station. Timber coming down the water and carts going up the road toward Silesia and Poland all had to pass this one narrow place and pay for it, which makes Strečno a business before it is a fortress.Strečno sa v písomnostiach objavuje prvý raz roku 1316, v čase, keď väčšinu dnešného západného a severného Slovenska ovládal Matúš Čák Trenčiansky a nepodriaďoval sa nikomu, kráľovi zo všetkých najmenej. Prvá zmienka z roku 1316 je údajom o listine, nie o tom, kedy sem položili prvý kameň — účel tohto miesta však listina nijako neskrýva. Pod hradom bol brod a mýtna stanica. Drevo schádzajúce po vode aj vozy stúpajúce cestou k Sliezsku a do Poľska museli prejsť týmto jediným úzkym miestom a zaplatiť — a Strečno je tak podnikom skôr, než je pevnosťou.
