In 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the army of the Kingdom of Hungary and rode across the country, and King Béla IV came out of hiding convinced that earth banks and wooden palisades were worth nothing. His answer was stone, and the map of Slovak castles is largely his answer written across the landscape. Sklabiňa belongs to that century: the sources put its beginnings in the first half of the thirteenth century, on the site of an older fortification, although they do not agree whether the first stone went up before the invasion or after it. What is certain is smaller and stranger. The county archive that this castle later kept held charters going back to 1242 — the year after the Mongols left, when a shaken kingdom started writing everything down again.V roku 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko armádu Uhorského kráľovstva a prehnalo sa krajinou; kráľ Belo IV. sa vrátil z úkrytu presvedčený, že hlinené valy a drevené palisády nie sú na nič. Jeho odpoveďou bol kameň a mapa slovenských hradov je do veľkej miery práve táto odpoveď vpísaná do krajiny. Sklabiňa do tohto storočia patrí: pramene kladú jej začiatky do prvej polovice 13. storočia, na miesto staršieho opevnenia, hoci sa nezhodujú v tom, či prvý kameň položili pred vpádom alebo až po ňom. Isté je niečo menšie a zvláštnejšie. Stoličný archív, ktorý sa tu neskôr uchovával, obsahoval listiny až z roku 1242 — z roku po odchode Mongolov, keď otrasené kráľovstvo začalo znova všetko zapisovať.
