In the second half of the nineteenth century the main line up the Váh valley was built past the fortress, and the branch towards Nitra was taken off it here. That turned a small garrison town into a railway junction, and a junction is what Leopoldov has been ever since: far more trains stop here than a town of under four thousand people would otherwise see, and the station serves Hlohovec, the much older and larger town on the far bank. Inside the walls the prison held the empire's ordinary convicts as well as its political ones, and the settlement outside grew on the two payrolls — the railway and the gaol — that it still lives on today.V druhej polovici devätnásteho storočia postavili popri pevnosti hlavnú trať Považím a práve tu z nej odbočila trať smerom na Nitru. Z malého posádkového mestečka sa tak stal železničný uzol a tým Leopoldov zostal dodnes: zastavuje tu oveľa viac vlakov, než by mesto s necelými štyrmi tisíckami obyvateľov inak videlo, a zo stanice sa chodí aj do Hlohovca, oveľa staršieho a väčšieho mesta na druhom brehu. V trestnici sedeli obyčajní odsúdení rovnako ako politickí a osada za hradbami rástla z tých istých dvoch výplat — zo železnice a z väznice — z ktorých žije aj teraz.
