Leopoldov stands on the Váh directly across the river from Hlohovec, about twenty kilometres north-east of Trnava, where the valley opens out of the hills into the lowland. The ground is flat river terrace, and that is the point: a fortress here commanded the crossing and the road up the valley with nothing in the way and nowhere for an attacker to hide.Leopoldov leží na Váhu priamo oproti Hlohovcu, asi dvadsať kilometrov severovýchodne od Trnavy, tam, kde sa dolina otvára z kopcov do nížiny. The storyHistória
When the Ottomans took Nové Zámky in 1663, the Habsburg defensive line lost its strongest point and a replacement was ordered at once. The new fortress was built between 1665 and 1669 — a regular bastioned star on open ground beside the Váh — and named Leopoldstadt after the Emperor Leopold I. The Slovak form of that name is the town's.Keď Osmani v roku 1663 dobyli Nové Zámky, habsburská obranná línia stratila svoj najsilnejší bod a náhradu nariadili okamžite. Nová pevnosť vznikla v rokoch 1665 – 1669 — pravidelná bastiónová hviezda na otvorenej rovine pri Váhu — a dostala meno Leopoldstadt po cisárovi Leopoldovi I. Slovenská podoba tohto mena je zároveň menom mesta.
It saw fighting in the anti-Habsburg uprisings and was besieged during the Rákóczi war without being taken. Once the Ottoman frontier moved away, a fortress this far inside the country had no military purpose left; it served as barracks and stores, and in the eighteen-fifties it was converted into a prison.Zažila boje v protihabsburských povstaniach a počas Rákócziho vojny ju obliehali, no nedobyli. Keď sa osmanská hranica vzdialila, pevnosť tak hlboko vo vnútrozemí stratila vojenský zmysel; slúžila ako kasárne a sklady a v 50. rokoch 19. storočia ju premenili na väznicu.
It has been one ever since, and is one of the country's maximum-security prisons — among the largest in the Slovak prison service, and one of the few that hold prisoners serving life sentences. The name carries weight in Slovak: political prisoners were held here in large numbers in the nineteen-fifties, and a violent revolt in 1990, during which prisoners took control of part of the complex and buildings burned, is what many people still associate with it.Väznicou je dodnes a patrí medzi ústavy s maximálnym stupňom stráženia — je jedným z najväčších ústavov slovenského väzenstva a jedným z mála, kde si väzni odpykávajú doživotné tresty. Meno má v slovenčine váhu: v 50. rokoch tu vo veľkom sedeli politickí väzni a s Leopoldovom si mnohí ľudia dodnes spájajú násilnú vzburu z roku 1990, počas ktorej väzni ovládli časť areálu a horeli budovy.
What to seeČo vidieť
Say it plainly: the fortress is a working prison and there is nothing to visit. There are no tours, no open days and no viewing platform, and photographing the walls is not welcome. What a visitor gets is the shape of the place from the road and from the far bank — long earth ramparts, the line of the moat, and the garrison town's grid behind them.Povedzme to rovno: pevnosť je fungujúcou väznicou a niet tu čo navštíviť. Nie sú tu prehliadky, dni otvorených dverí ani vyhliadka a fotografovanie múrov nie je vítané. Návštevník uvidí tvar miesta z cesty a z druhého brehu — dlhé zemné valy, líniu priekopy a za nimi pravouhlú sieť posádkového mesta.
Knowing what Leopoldov is makes sense of its neighbour. From the château terrace at Hlohovec the outline of the fortress and the crossing it was built to guard lie out together, and the pair explain why anything was put here at all. Hlohovec has the château, the park and one of the oldest theatre buildings in Slovakia; Piešťany and its spa island are a short way upstream.Keď človek vie, čím Leopoldov je, dáva zmysel aj jeho sused. Work and industryPráca a priemysel
The prison is one of the larger workplaces in the town, and the railway junction accounts for a good part of the rest — the operating, shunting and maintenance work that a junction of this importance generates.Väznica patrí k väčším pracoviskám v meste a železničný uzol tvorí dobrú časť zvyšku — prevádzka, posun a údržba, ktoré uzol takéhoto významu prináša.
Otherwise Leopoldov works as a commuter town. The pharmaceutical and engineering plants at Hlohovec, the factories along the motorway at Trnava and the service economy at Piešťany are all within a short journey, and the arable land around the town is farmed from the villages rather than from it.Inak Leopoldov funguje ako mesto dochádzajúcich. Farmaceutické a strojárske závody v Hlohovci, fabriky pri diaľnici v Trnave aj služby v Piešťanoch sú na krátku cestu a ornú pôdu okolo mesta obrábajú okolité obce, nie ono samo.
Getting thereAko sa tam dostať
Leopoldov is a junction on the main line from Bratislava to Žilina and the point where the branch towards Hlohovec and Nitra leaves it, so far more trains stop here than a town of this size would otherwise see, and it is the station many people use for Hlohovec. By road it is a few minutes from the D1 motorway.Leopoldov je uzlom na hlavnej trati z Bratislavy do Žiliny a miestom, kde z nej odbočuje trať na Hlohovec a Nitru, takže tu zastavuje oveľa viac vlakov, než by mesto tejto veľkosti inak videlo, a mnohí ľudia ho používajú ako stanicu pre Hlohovec.
