Eperia is out on the estate, and the honest thing to say is that the interesting part of Prešov is a bus ride away in the other direction. Take it. The old town is built around one enormously long, lens-shaped square — Hlavná ulica — lined on both sides with pastel Gothic and Renaissance burgher houses, widening in the middle to hold the churches and narrowing again at each end. It is one of the finest street-squares in Slovakia and it takes about twenty minutes to walk end to end if you do not stop, which you will.Eperia stojí vonku na sídlisku a poctivé je povedať, že zaujímavá časť Prešova je kúsok autobusom opačným smerom. Choďte tam. Staré mesto je postavené okolo jediného, nesmierne dlhého šošovkovitého námestia — Hlavnej ulice — lemovaného z oboch strán pastelovými gotickými a renesančnými meštianskymi domami, ktoré sa v strede rozširuje pre kostoly a na koncoch sa opäť zužuje. Je to jedno z najkrajších ulicových námestí na Slovensku a prejsť ho od konca po koniec trvá asi dvadsať minút — ak sa nezastavíte, čo sa vám nepodarí.
Prešov is also the centre of the Greek Catholic east. The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is the seat of the archeparchy, and the city has long been a focus of Rusyn cultural life — a layer of eastern Slovakia that visitors travelling only between Bratislava and the Tatras never meet. On the square itself, the Gothic parish church of St Nicholas and the Rákóczi Palace, which houses the Šariš Museum, anchor the middle. On the southern edge of the city, Solivar preserves the machinery of a salt-extraction works that ran for centuries — timber hoist houses and pumping gear, a genuinely unusual industrial monument.Prešov je aj centrom gréckokatolíckeho východu. Katedrála svätého Jána Krstiteľa je sídlom archieparchie a mesto je oddávna ohniskom rusínskeho kultúrneho života — vrstvy východného Slovenska, s ktorou sa návštevník cestujúci iba medzi Bratislavou a Tatrami nestretne. Na samotnom námestí drží stred gotický farský Kostol svätého Mikuláša a Rákócziho palác so Šarišským múzeom. Na južnom okraji mesta uchováva Solivar zariadenia soľnej bane, ktorá pracovala po stáročia — drevené ťažné budovy a čerpacie stroje, naozaj nevšednú technickú pamiatku.

An enormous ruin riding a conical hill above the little town of Veľký Šariš, and one of the very few in Slovakia that can be spoken of in the same breath as Spiš for sheer extent.
