Start with the word on the roof. Eperia is a modern coinage built out of Eperjes — the town's Hungarian name, the one it carried through the centuries when it was a royal free town of the Kingdom of Hungary, and the one still used across the border today. The Germans who settled here called it Preschau; the Slovaks call it Prešov. The Hungarian form is usually explained from eper, "strawberry", and that reading is old enough to have shaped the town's own symbolism. A shopping centre that reaches for the medieval name rather than inventing a Latinate one is, at the very least, doing something more interesting than most.Začnime slovom na streche. Eperia je moderné slovo utvorené z názvu Eperjes — z maďarského mena mesta, ktoré nosilo po stáročia, kým bolo slobodným kráľovským mestom Uhorska, a ktoré sa za hranicou používa dodnes. Nemci, čo sa tu usadili, mu hovorili Preschau; Slováci Prešov. Maďarská podoba sa zvyčajne vysvetľuje zo slova eper, „jahoda“, a tento výklad je dosť starý na to, aby sa premietol aj do symboliky mesta. Nákupné centrum, ktoré siahne po stredovekom mene namiesto vymysleného latinizmu, robí prinajmenšom čosi zaujímavejšie než väčšina.
The site is the other half of the story. Eperia does not stand in the old town — it stands out on Sekčov, the housing estate built through the 1970s and 1980s on the north-eastern edge of the city and now the largest residential district in Prešov. Tens of thousands of people live in those ranked concrete slabs, and for decades their nearest large-format retail was a drive away. Eperia was built into an existing commercial strip out there, and it works the way big regional centres in Slovakia usually do: it serves a housing estate first, a city second and a whole region third, drawing in shoppers from the Šariš villages and the valleys north towards Bardejov.Druhou polovicou príbehu je samotné miesto. Eperia nestojí v starom meste — stojí vonku na Sekčove, sídlisku postavenom v sedemdesiatych a osemdesiatych rokoch na severovýchodnom okraji mesta, dnes najväčšej obytnej štvrti Prešova. V tých zoradených panelákoch žijú desaťtisíce ľudí a desaťročia mali najbližší veľkoplošný obchod až kus cesty autom. Eperia vyrástla v tamojšej obchodnej zóne a funguje tak, ako veľké regionálne centrá na Slovensku zvyčajne fungujú: slúži najprv sídlisku, potom mestu a napokon celému kraju — priťahuje nakupujúcich zo šarišských dedín aj z dolín na sever smerom na Bardejov.
