Life came back to the hill during the eleventh century, and around 1100 the building started in earnest. The first great round residential tower on the summit collapsed soon after it was finished — probably in an earth movement — and in the first third of the thirteenth century a new one went up right beside it; that is the round tower you climb today. In the same decades came a two-storey Romanesque palace and a castle chapel. The oldest surviving mention is a charter of 1209 recording a sale of land here to the Spiš provost Adolf: the land was exempted from the authority of the župan, the king's governor of the county — which only makes sense if the župan's seat, this castle, already existed.
