History of ŽeliezovceDejiny — Želiezovce

Želiezovce is a small bilingual town on the lower Hron with two improbable claims on the outside world: a Stone Age pottery style named after finds in its fields, used by archaeologists far beyond Slovakia, and two summers when Franz Schubert lived and worked in the manor house here.Želiezovce sú malé dvojjazyčné mesto na dolnom Pohroní s dvoma nečakanými stopami vo svete: podľa nálezov z tunajších polí dostal meno celý typ neolitickej keramiky, ktorý archeológovia používajú ďaleko za hranicami Slovenska, a v tunajšom kaštieli strávil dve letá Franz Schubert.

  1. c. 5000 BCokolo 5000 pred Kr. The town that named a pottery styleMesto, ktoré dalo meno keramike

The first farmers of central Europe made pots decorated with incised lines; archaeologists call the whole culture the Linear Pottery culture and date it roughly to 5500–4500 BC. In its later centuries a distinctive way of decorating vessels appears along the middle Danube, and because it was first recognised from finds dug out of the fields around this town it is called the Želiezovce group. So the name of a small Slovak town sits in archaeology textbooks written in half a dozen languages. The warm, level, well-watered land that drew those first farmers is the same land being farmed here now.Prví roľníci strednej Európy vyrábali nádoby zdobené rytými líniami; archeológia celú túto kultúru nazýva kultúrou s lineárnou keramikou a datuje ju zhruba do rokov 5500 – 4500 pred Kristom.

  2. 1274–13451274 – 1345 A church, a mill and a stone bridgeKostol, mlyn a kamenný most

The town is first mentioned in writing in 1274, as Selyz, and the record already names a church, a mill and a stone bridge. The bridge is worth stopping on: in the thirteenth century rivers were crossed at fords or on timber, so a stone bridge over the Hron says a route needed this place. The estate belonged to noble families of the region — the Becsei among them in the 1340s — and the Gothic church of St James, whose core still stands, goes back to about 1332. Everything that happened here afterwards happened because the river had a crossing. Panstvo držali šľachtické rody kraja, v 40. rokoch 14. storočia napríklad Becseiovci, a gotický Kostol svätého Jakuba, ktorého jadro stojí dodnes, siaha asi do roku 1332.

  3. 1543–16641543 – 1664 Between two fortressesMedzi dvoma pevnosťami

Želiezovce had no castle, and places without walls do not get sieges written about them — they get raided and taxed by both sides at once. What is recorded is what happened on either side of them: the Ottomans took Ostrihom on the Danube in 1543, took Nové Zámky in 1663 and Levice up the valley in November of the same year, and the imperial army retook Levice in June 1664. The Hron valley was the corridor between those events and this town sits in the middle of it. So when you read that some small town "was destroyed by the Turks", ask how we know; for places like this the honest answer is usually that the details have not survived.Želiezovce nemali hrad a o obciach bez hradieb sa kroniky nepíšu — neobliehajú ich, len ich plienia a zdaňujú z oboch strán naraz.

  4. 17201720 The Esterházy manor and its parkEsterháziovský kaštieľ a park

In 1720 the Esterházy family, one of the great landowning houses of the kingdom, built a manor house here and laid out a large park beside the river around it. This is the economy of the age made visible: the estate's fields, its labourers and its dues paid for a house, a garden and a household with music in it. The building was remodelled later in a classical style, and the old trees of the park are still the best thing about the place. Without that house the town's one internationally famous episode could not have happened at all.V roku 1720 tu Esterháziovci, jeden z veľkých veľkostatkárskych rodov kráľovstva, postavili kaštieľ a okolo neho pri rieke založili rozsiahly park.

  5. 1818 and 1824; 19 April 18491818 a 1824; 19. apríla 1849 Schubert's two summers, and a battleSchubertove dve letá a bitka

In the summer of 1818 the Viennese composer Franz Schubert, twenty-one years old and unknown outside a circle of friends, came to Zseliz as music tutor to the daughters of Count Johann Karl Esterházy; he returned for a second summer in 1824. He worked here more steadily than he usually managed in Vienna, and much of his music for piano four hands — the Grand Duo, the Marche militaire — belongs to these stays; the Fantasy in F minor, written later, is dedicated to Caroline, the younger daughter. A generation afterwards the same countryside saw the revolution: on 19 April 1849 the Hungarian revolutionary army beat the imperial army at Veľké Šarluhy, whose fields touch this town's own. Ten minutes by car separates the manor from the battlefield, and two completely different worlds.V lete 1818 prišiel do Zselízu dvadsaťjedenročný viedenský skladateľ Franz Schubert, mimo okruhu priateľov ešte celkom neznámy, ako učiteľ hudby dcér grófa Johanna Karla Esterházyho; o šesť rokov neskôr, v lete 1824, sa vrátil. Pracovalo sa mu tu sústredenejšie ako vo Viedni a veľká časť jeho hudby pre štvorručný klavír — Grand Duo, Marche militaire — vznikla práve počas týchto pobytov; Fantázia f mol, napísaná neskôr, nesie venovanie mladšej dcére Karoline. O generáciu neskôr prešla tým istým krajom revolúcia: 19. apríla 1849 porazilo uhorské revolučné vojsko cisársku armádu pri Veľkých Šarluhách, ktorých chotár susedí s tunajším. Kaštieľ a bojisko delí desať minút autom a dva úplne odlišné svety.

  6. 1920–19381920 – 1938 A new border, an old estateNová hranica, starý veľkostatok

The Treaty of Trianon of 1920 put Želiezovce into Czechoslovakia, and its mostly Hungarian-speaking inhabitants became a minority in it. The new republic's land reform broke up the great estates of the south, and the age in which a family like the Esterházy could keep a house and a park out of the rents of the surrounding fields was over. The manor entered the long, uneven decline the town is still dealing with — restored in phases, in poor repair between them. Out in the fields the work went on exactly as before.

  7. November 1938 – March 1945november 1938 – marec 1945 The front stops on the HronFront sa zastaví na Hrone

The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 gave southern Slovakia to Hungary, and Želiezovce with it. At the end of that year the Red Army reached the Hron and the river itself became the front line: for three winter months two armies faced each other across the water, the town was fought over and badly damaged, and the Gothic church of St James was among the buildings wrecked in 1945. What stands here today was rebuilt out of that.Prvá viedenská arbitráž z 2. novembra 1938 pripojila južné Slovensko k Maďarsku a Želiezovce s ním.
