The town is first mentioned in writing in 1274, as Selyz, and the record already names a church, a mill and a stone bridge. The bridge is worth stopping on: in the thirteenth century rivers were crossed at fords or on timber, so a stone bridge over the Hron says a route needed this place. The estate belonged to noble families of the region — the Becsei among them in the 1340s — and the Gothic church of St James, whose core still stands, goes back to about 1332. Pri tom moste sa oplatí zastaviť: v 13. storočí sa cez rieky chodilo najmä brodmi alebo po drevených lávkach, takže kamenný most cez Hron hovorí, že tadiaľto viedla dôležitá cesta. Panstvo držali šľachtické rody kraja, v 40. rokoch 14. storočia napríklad Becseiovci, a gotický Kostol svätého Jakuba, ktorého jadro stojí dodnes, siaha asi do roku 1332. Všetko, čo sa tu dialo neskôr, sa dialo preto, že rieka mala prechod.
