Želiezovce stand on the Hron in the flat southern part of the Levice district, downstream of Levice and not far above the reach where the river runs out towards the Danube. The storyHistória
The Hron valley here has been settled since the Neolithic, and excavations around the town gave archaeology the term Želiezovce group — a late phase of the Linear Pottery culture, recognised by the way its vessels are decorated and used to describe sites well beyond Slovakia. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the estate belonged to a branch of the Esterházy family, who built the manor house and laid out the park along the river. Franz Schubert came to Zseliz in the summer of 1818 as music tutor to the two daughters of Count Johann Karl Esterházy, and returned for a second summer in 1824. He worked here in a way he rarely managed in Vienna: much of his piano music for four hands belongs to these months, and the great F minor Fantasy, written later, carries a dedication to Caroline Esterházy, the younger daughter. What lay behind that dedication has been argued over ever since, which is a polite way of saying nobody knows.Franz Schubert prišiel do Zselizu v lete 1818 ako učiteľ hudby dvoch dcér grófa Johanna Karla Esterházyho a na druhé leto sa vrátil v roku 1824. The Esterházy manor house and its park are the reason to come, and they need an honest description. The house has spent long stretches in poor repair, restoration has proceeded in phases, and what can actually be entered has varied from one year to the next. The park along the Hron, with its old trees, is the part that has always been walkable.Kaštieľ Esterházyovcov a jeho park sú dôvodom návštevy a treba ich opísať na rovinu. Schubert is commemorated in the park and in the outbuilding traditionally shown as his lodging, and the town's concerts carry his name. A small memorial exhibition has existed on and off; as with the manor house, ask locally what is open before making the journey for it.Schuberta pripomína pamätník v parku a hospodárska budova, ktorú tradícia označuje za jeho bývanie, a jeho meno nesú aj mestské koncerty. Beyond that the interest is the river and the country around it. The Hron below the town is slow and willow-lined and is fished all summer, the lanes across the plain make flat cycling, and Levice, with its castle and county museum, is a short run upstream.Inak je zaujímavosťou rieka a krajina okolo nej. Agriculture is the base and always has been: cereals, maize, sunflower and vegetables on some of the warmest land in Slovakia, with the co-operatives, grain stores and processing that go with them.Základom je a vždy bolo poľnohospodárstvo: obilniny, kukurica, slnečnica a zelenina na jednej z najteplejších pôd na Slovensku, spolu s družstvami, obilnými skladmi a spracovaním, ktoré k nim patria.
Industry is light — engineering workshops, food and building trades — and a good deal of the working population commutes to Levice, to the plants around Mochovce and further west, or works abroad for part of the year. This is one of the districts where the difference between the Slovak west and the Slovak south is easiest to feel.Priemysel je ľahký — strojárske dielne, potravinárstvo a stavebné remeslá — a značná časť pracujúcich dochádza do Levíc, do závodov okolo Mochoviec a ďalej na západ, prípadne časť roka pracuje v zahraničí. A railway runs down the Hron from Levice through the town towards the Danube, and buses connect it with Levice and Štúrovo; by road it is on the same route between the two.
