In April 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at the river Slaná and the kingdom spent a year being burned through. King Béla IV drew one conclusion from it: wooden forts and open villages protect nobody, and the country had to be rebuilt in stone. Levice Castle belongs to exactly that wave — it was raised in the second half of the thirteenth century on the low rock above the town, to watch the road. So when somebody tells you the Mongols destroyed this castle, check the dates: in 1241 there was nothing here for them to destroy.V apríli 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorskú kráľovskú armádu pri rieke Slaná a krajina sa potom rok topila v pustošení. Kráľ Belo IV. si z toho odniesol jedno ponaučenie: drevené hrádky a otvorené dediny neochránia nikoho, treba stavať z kameňa.
