Levice stands on the edge of the Hron lowland where the river valley opens out of the hills, roughly midway between Nitra and Zvolen. The storyHistória
The castle was built in the thirteenth century on a low rock above the town and became a frontier fortress against the Ottomans. It was besieged repeatedly; the battle fought outside Levice in 1664 was one of the imperial victories of that war.Hrad postavili v 13. storočí na nízkej skale nad mestom a stal sa pohraničnou pevnosťou proti Osmanom. Inside the walls the Dobó family built a Renaissance manor house in the sixteenth century. The fortifications were slighted after the Rákóczi uprising, leaving the combination visible today: a ruined castle enclosing an intact residence.Vo vnútri hradieb postavila rodina Dobóovcov v 16. storočí renesančný kaštieľ. The castle hill is open as a park and the Tekov Museum occupies the manor house, with county history, archaeology and folk collections. Work and industryPráca a priemysel
Levice was a substantial industrial town under socialism — refrigerator manufacturing was its best-known trade — and today runs on engineering, food processing and agriculture. The Mochovce nuclear power station, a short distance west, is the largest single employer in the district and supplies a significant share of Slovak electricity; its third unit entered service in 2023.Levice boli za socializmu významným priemyselným mestom — najznámejšou výrobou boli chladničky — a dnes stoja na strojárstve, potravinárstve a poľnohospodárstve. Trains run to Levice from Nové Zámky and from Zvolen; the road link from Nitra is the faster approach by car.
