Archduke Joseph August and his wife Augusta left in October 1918 as the monarchy collapsed, and they left the furniture, the library and the collections standing where they were — which is why the rooms here are still furnished when most Slovak manor houses are empty shells. The new Czechoslovak state took the estate and made it the summer residence of the president. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk came from 1923 onward, once for four months at a stretch, receiving foreign statesmen and riding out to the lime kilns at Skýcov and the ruin below Hrušov castle; the writer Karel Čapek was among the guests, and his book of conversations with Masaryk grew out of talks like these. The National Stud Farm was founded on the same estate land in 1921, and Edvard Beneš spent September 1936 here: the horses and the house were one decision, not two.Arcivojvoda Jozef August a jeho manželka Augusta odišli v októbri 1918, keď sa monarchia rúcala, a nábytok, knižnicu i zbierky nechali tam, kde stáli — preto sú tunajšie izby dodnes zariadené, kým väčšina slovenských kaštieľov je prázdna. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk sem chodil od roku 1923, raz zostal aj štyri mesiace, prijímal zahraničných štátnikov a na koni vyrážal k vápenkám v Skýcove i k zrúcanine pod Hrušovom; medzi hosťami bol aj spisovateľ Karel Čapek a jeho Hovory s T. G. M. vyrástli z takýchto rozhovorov. Na pozemkoch toho istého panstva vznikol v roku 1921 Národný žrebčín a Edvard Beneš tu strávil september 1936: kone a kaštieľ boli jedno rozhodnutie, nie dve.
