Šomoška has spent its whole existence on a boundary of one kind or another. For a generation in the sixteenth century it was the boundary between Christendom and the Ottoman Empire, and the garrisons on either side of it lived off raiding. Four hundred years later the boundary came back in a different form: after the First World War the frontier between Czechoslovakia and Hungary had to be fixed on the ground, hill by hill, and the surveyors worked out these particular slopes in detail.Šomoška strávila celú svoju existenciu na nejakej hranici. Jednu generáciu v šestnástom storočí to bola hranica medzi kresťanstvom a Osmanskou ríšou a posádky na oboch jej stranách žili z výpadov. O štyristo rokov sa hranica vrátila v inej podobe: po prvej svetovej vojne bolo treba pohraničie medzi Československom a Maďarskom vytýčiť v teréne, kopec po kopci — a práve tieto svahy si zememerači premeriavali obzvlášť podrobne.
The result is still visible from the wall-walk. The castle and the basalt waterfall are in Slovakia. The village at the foot of the hill, close enough to hear a dog bark, is in Hungary. The line does not follow a river or a watershed here; it threads between a ruin and the houses that had always lived beneath it. That is why the site has two names in constant use and why so many of the walkers you meet on the path came up from the other side.Výsledok vidno z ochodze dodnes. Hrad aj čadičový vodopád sú na Slovensku. Dedina pod kopcom, dosť blízko na to, aby ste počuli zabrechať psa, je v Maďarsku. Čiara tu nesleduje rieku ani rozvodie; prevlieka sa medzi zrúcaninou a domami, ktoré pod ňou odjakživa stáli. Práve preto má lokalita dve bežne používané mená a preto toľko turistov, ktorých na chodníku stretnete, prišlo z druhej strany.
