After 1867 the Kingdom of Hungary ran its own half of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and its schools ran in Hungarian. Pavol Országh went to the gymnasium at Miskolc from 1862 to 1865, then to the Lutheran lyceum at Kežmarok until 1870, then to the law academy at Prešov from 1870 to 1872. His first poems were written in Hungarian and German, because those were the languages an educated boy was given. Then he chose to write in Slovak instead — a decision that cost him readers, prizes and a career, and is the reason his name is on schools today.
