The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and was crushed at the end of October, and what was left of it went into the mountains — the Low Tatras, the range whose main ridge stands directly above this valley — to fight the winter out as partisans. Down in the basin the front then stopped dead: Liptovský Mikuláš was fought over for weeks and was only liberated on 4 April 1945. About 1,400 soldiers of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps are buried in the war cemetery on Háj-Nicovô above the town.Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944, koncom októbra ho potlačili a to, čo z neho zostalo, odišlo do hôr — do Nízkych Tatier, ktorých hlavný hrebeň sa dvíha priamo nad touto dolinou — prezimovať ako partizáni. Dole v kotline sa front zastavil: o Liptovský Mikuláš sa bojovalo týždne a oslobodili ho až 4. apríla 1945. Na vojnovom cintoríne na Háji-Nicovô nad mestom je pochovaných asi 1 400 vojakov 1. československého armádneho zboru.
