A municipality that is really one road up one valley: two show caves, a wall of hotels and chalets, and the Jasná ski area at the top of it. The Demänovská valley cuts south into the Low Tatras from the Liptov basin, opening just outside Liptovský Mikuláš and climbing some ten kilometres to the foot of Chopok. Two names sit close together here. The old farming village of Demänová at the mouth of the valley belongs to Liptovský Mikuláš; the municipality of Demänovská Dolina is the valley above it, and in Slovak a single capital letter separates the valley, Demänovská dolina, from the village, Demänovská Dolina.Dve mená sú si tu veľmi blízke. Water and limestone made this valley worth coming to. The Demänovka sinks underground and has cut one of the longest cave systems in Slovakia, tens of kilometres of surveyed passage on several levels, of which two separate stretches are lit and open to visitors.Túto dolinu urobili návštevy hodnou voda a vápenec. The Ice Cave has been known for centuries and was written about while the bones found in it were still being taken for a dragon's. The Cave of Liberty is modern by comparison: it was found in 1921 by Alojz Král and opened to the public a few years later, and it is the larger and richer of the two.Ľadová jaskyňa je známa po stáročia a písalo sa o nej ešte v čase, keď sa kosti nájdené v nej pokladali za dračie. Everything else followed the caves and then the snow. Chalets and hotels went up the valley through the twentieth century, lifts climbed onto Chopok, and the settlement became a municipality of its own — one with far more beds for visitors than permanent residents.Všetko ostatné prišlo za jaskyňami a potom za snehom. Chaty a hotely sa v 20. storočí posúvali dolinou hore, na Chopok vystúpili lanovky a osídlenie sa osamostatnilo ako vlastná obec — s mnohonásobne väčším počtom postelí pre návštevníkov než trvalých obyvateľov.

The Cave of Liberty is the main visit: a guided route through dripstone halls, flowstone and pools still being formed by the water running through them. It is cold in any weather and involves a long series of steps.Jaskyňa slobody je hlavnou návštevou: prehliadka so sprievodcom cez sintrové siene, kvaple a jazierka, ktoré voda pretekajúca cez ne stále tvorí. Chladno je v nej za každého počasia a čaká vás dlhý rad schodov.
The Ice Cave is a short way further up the road and higher above the valley floor, with a climb to the entrance before the tour begins. Its ice is permanent, though the volume of it changes through the year. Both caves are state-run and work to fixed tour times, and neither is open all year round — the ice cave in particular is a warm-season opening, so check the timetables before driving up.Ľadová jaskyňa je kúsok vyššie pri ceste a vyššie nad dnom doliny — k vchodu sa treba vyštverať ešte pred začiatkom prehliadky. Ľad v nej je trvalý, jeho množstvo sa však počas roka mení. Obe jaskyne spravuje štát, obe majú pevné časy prehliadok a ani jedna nie je otvorená nepretržite celý rok — ľadová najmä v teplej polovici, takže si časy pred cestou overte.
Above them the road ends at Jasná, the lift stations on the north face of Chopok and the largest ski area in the country, which this site covers in its skiing chapter. In summer the same cable cars carry walkers to the ridge, and a small lake lies among the spruces at the top of the valley.Nad nimi sa cesta končí v Jasnej, pri staniciach lanoviek na severnej strane Chopku a v najväčšom lyžiarskom areáli krajiny, ktorému sa táto stránka venuje v kapitole o lyžovaní. V lete tie isté lanovky vynášajú na hlavný hrebeň turistov a pri hornom konci doliny leží medzi smrekmi malé pleso.
Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen
This is a resort, and saying so is more useful than pretending otherwise. The buildings are hotels, apartment blocks and chalets, the population swells and empties with the season, and the busiest hours are winter mornings and summer weekends.Toto je stredisko a povedať to je užitočnejšie než tváriť sa, že ide o dedinu. Budovy sú hotely, apartmánové domy a chaty, počet ľudí so sezónou narastá a opäť opadne a najrušnejšie sú zimné rána a letné víkendy.
The whole valley lies inside the Low Tatras National Park. Parking is managed and fills early on good days, the road backs up, and above the tree line walkers keep to the marked paths. Cave tours sell out on wet summer afternoons, when everybody in Liptov has the same idea at once.Celá dolina leží v Národnom parku Nízke Tatry. Parkovanie je regulované a v pekné dni sa zaplní zavčasu, cesta sa vie upchať a nad hornou hranicou lesa sa od turistov očakáva, že zostanú na značených chodníkoch. Prehliadky jaskýň sa v daždivých letných popoludniach vypredávajú, lebo vtedy dostane celý Liptov ten istý nápad naraz.
Getting thereAko sa tam dostať
Buses run up the valley from Liptovský Mikuláš, which is the nearest town and the nearest railway station, and continue as far as Jasná. By car it is a signposted turn south off the main Liptov road, and in season the car parks are the constraint, not the driving.Dolinou premávajú autobusy z Liptovského Mikuláša, ktorý je najbližším mestom aj najbližšou železničnou stanicou, a pokračujú až do Jasnej. Autom ide o značenú odbočku na juh z hlavnej liptovskej cesty a v sezóne je obmedzením parkovanie, nie jazda.
