Forty years of communismŠtyridsať rokov komunizmu
Bytča Château and the Wedding PalaceBytčiansky zámok a Sobášny palác
On 3 April 1950 the communist state took the château and everything belonging to it into its own ownership, and after 1960 a long programme of restoration began. The main wing became the state regional archive, the repository holding the written records of the old counties of the upper Váh, so that generations of Slovak historians knew Bytča as an address long before they knew it as a town. That is the reason the building came through the twentieth century in such good condition — an archive needs dry walls and a sound roof more than a museum does. It is also the reason you cannot simply wander through the interior: it is a working institution, not a set of furnished rooms.
