Everything in the Tatras starts at Poprad: the Žilina–Košice main line runs along the foot of the range through Štrba and Svit to Poprad-Tatry, and from the same station the narrow-gauge Tatra Electric Railway climbs to Starý Smokovec. From there one electric line carries on west past Tatranská Polianka and Vyšné Hágy to Štrbské Pleso and another turns east to Tatranská Lomnica — and Štrbské Pleso has a second way up as well, the rack railway that hauls itself from Štrba station straight to the lake. Buses fill the gaps: north from Poprad by Veľká Lomnica to Tatranská Lomnica, then over the shoulder of the Belianske Tatry through Tatranská Kotlina to Ždiar and Tatranská Javorina.
