The Years the Castles Came DownRoky, keď padali hrady

Most Slovak ruins were made by fire, by an abandoned roof or by two hundred years of frost. Kapušany was made by a decision. When the Rákóczi uprising collapsed in the early eighteenth century, the victorious side looked at the map of Upper Hungary and saw what every rebellion had used: a scattering of hill castles, each of them small, awkward to besiege and perfectly adequate as a base. The answer was to take them down.Väčšinu slovenských zrúcanín stvoril požiar, opustená strecha alebo dvesto rokov mrazu. Kapušany stvorilo rozhodnutie. Keď sa začiatkom osemnásteho storočia Rákócziho povstanie zrútilo, víťazná strana sa pozrela na mapu Horného Uhorska a uvidela to, čo využívalo každé povstanie: roztrúsené vrchové hrady, každý malý, ťažko dobyteľný a celkom postačujúci ako základňa. Odpoveďou bolo zbúrať ich.

Kapušany was one of them. The walls were not stormed, they were dismantled — and once a castle stops being a castle, the village below has a quarry. Stone from slighted fortresses across the region went into farmhouses, barns and church walls for generations afterwards, which is why so many of these ruins are so much smaller than their ground plans. What survives on the summit is the part nobody could be bothered to carry down.

Not stormed, not burnt — simply taken apart, so that nothing could ever be defended here again.Nedobytý ani nevypálený — jednoducho rozobraný, aby sa tu už nikdy nedalo nič brániť.
