The climb starts in the village and does not bother with a warm-up. A path leaves the last houses and turns almost at once into rock: roughly twenty to thirty minutes of stony, steep going through scrub oak, with a final stretch where you will want a hand on the limestone. It is short. It is not gentle. And because the whole face is turned to the south, the sun sits on it from mid-morning until evening with almost nothing in the way of shade.Výstup sa začína v dedine a nerobí okolky. On top there is no gate to pay at and no roof over anything. Walls stand to varying heights around a small summit, with the stump of a tower at the high point, and all of it is open to the weather and to you. What you have really come for is the view: the Laborec winding directly below, Humenné laid out to the north, the wooded volcanic ridge of the Vihorlat away to the south-east, and the Laborecká vrchovina rolling away northward toward the passes.Hore nie je pokladňa ani strecha nad čímkoľvek. Okolo malého vrcholu stoja múry rozličnej výšky, v najvyššom bode s torzom veže, a celé je to otvorené počasiu aj vám. To, pre čo ste sem naozaj prišli, je výhľad: Laborec sa vinie priamo pod vami, na severe sa rozprestiera Humenné, ďaleko na juhovýchode sa dvíha zalesnený sopečný chrbát Vihorlatu a Laborecká vrchovina sa vlní na sever k priesmykom.
One more thing about this hill, and it matters as much as the castle does. The limestone under the walls is a national nature reserve. Bare, sun-baked rock stores heat, and what grows on it here is a warm, dry rock and steppe grassland that belongs to a far hotter and drier world than this one — vegetation holding on at the north-eastern margin of where it can live at all. The same limestone is riddled with caves. So stay on the marked path, keep off the open turf to either side of it, and pick nothing. It costs you nothing, and it is the entire reason the hill still looks the way it does.Ešte jedna vec o tomto kopci — a je rovnako dôležitá ako samotný hrad. Vápenec pod múrmi je národná prírodná rezervácia.
