The Italian Family Who StayedTaliansky rod, ktorý tu zostal

In the first years of the fourteenth century a prince of the house of Anjou, Charles Robert, fought his way to the crown of Hungary — and the men who had backed him came north with him. Among them were the Drugeths, a family out of the Kingdom of Naples: Italians carried by a dynastic accident into a river valley in the eastern Carpathians, a very long way indeed from anything they knew. They were rewarded as loyal men were rewarded, with land — and the land they were given was the upper Zemplín.V prvých rokoch štrnásteho storočia si knieža z rodu Anjou, Karol Róbert, vybojovalo uhorskú korunu — a muži, ktorí ho podporili, prišli s ním na sever. Boli medzi nimi Drugetovci, rod z Neapolského kráľovstva: Taliani, ktorých dynastická náhoda zaniesla do riečnej doliny vo východných Karpatoch, naozaj veľmi ďaleko od všetkého, čo poznali.

They did not treat it as a posting to be endured. The Drugeths settled at Humenné, made it their seat, and held this corner of the kingdom for the better part of four centuries — long enough to stop being Italians in Zemplín and start being the lords of it. Brekov was one of their castles; so was Jasenov, on its own hill not far away. Their name sits on the manor house in Humenné, on churches, on charters and on the property history of village after village between here and the Polish border. Very little in the upper Zemplín is not, somewhere in its past, a Drugeth story.

They came north for a coronation, and stayed for the better part of four hundred years.Prišli na sever kvôli korunovácii — a zostali takmer štyristo rokov.
