The white crag itselfSamotné biele bralo
Stop in the valley before you climb and look up. The rock is pale, steep and almost bare of trees — it announces itself from a long way off, and the walls on top only register second. Understanding the castle starts with understanding that nobody chose this spot for comfort.Zastavte sa v doline skôr, než vyrazíte, a pozrite sa hore. The hill is protected in its own right. Warm, dry rock and steppe grassland grows on this limestone — a flora of a much hotter, drier world, surviving this far north-east only because the bare stone hoards the sun. The same rock holds caves. Walk the marked path, do not cut across the turf, and pick nothing at all: what is growing beside your boot may have no second site for a very long way.Kopec je chránený sám osebe. The high point of the summit is what is left of the tower — enough masonry to read the plan of the thing, not enough to shelter under. Around it, wall stumps trace where the small upper castle ran with the shape of the rock rather than against it. There is nothing furnished, nothing reconstructed and nothing behind glass.Najvyšším bodom vrcholu je to, čo zostalo z veže — dosť muriva na to, aby ste z neho prečítali pôdorys, nie však dosť na to, aby ste sa pod ním schovali. From the summit the reason for the castle becomes obvious in about four seconds. The river, the road and the whole width of the valley lie underneath you, running north to Humenné and beyond it to the passes. Turn south-east and the dark wooded mass of the Vihorlat closes the horizon.Z vrcholu je dôvod existencie hradu zrejmý asi za štyri sekundy. Look for the fresh pointing, the propped lintels and the neatly sorted stone. Brekov has stayed standing because people have carried mortar up that path by hand, season after season. If part of the ruin is fenced or scaffolded when you arrive, that is the work in progress — go round it, and take the detour as a good sign rather than a disappointment.Všímajte si čerstvé škárovanie, podopreté preklady a úhľadne roztriedený kameň.
