History of TopoľčanyDejiny — Topoľčany

Topoľčany is a market town in the Nitra valley, named after the poplars along the river, with a royal charter from 1342 and a castle ruin on the ridge above it. For seven centuries its history is the ordinary history of a Hungarian market town — fairs, fires, Ottoman raids — and then comes the twentieth century.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. 1173, 1235 and the invasion of 12411173, 1235 a vpád v roku 1241 A castle that was already standingHrad, ktorý tu už stál

The town is first named in writing in 1173, and a castle above it appears in a document of 1235 as royal property. That order matters. Most stone castles in Slovakia were built because of the Mongol invasion, in the decades after 1241, when King Béla IV understood that a kingdom of open villages could be ridden through in a single summer — but this castle already existed, six years before the Mongols came. What happened to the market village on the river in that terrible year is simply not recorded, and it is more honest to say so than to invent a burning. The name itself is far plainer than any of this: topoľ is Slovak for poplar, and the river bank was full of them.

  2. c. 1300–1342okolo 1300 – 1342 Matúš Čák, and then a royal townMatúš Čák a potom kráľovské mesto

At the start of the fourteenth century the castle and its estate fell to Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the lord who ruled most of what is now western Slovakia in his own name, ignoring the king, until his death in 1321. After that the crown took the estate back. In 1342 Topoľčany was granted the rights of a royal town, which in practice meant the right to hold markets and to run its own affairs — and that is what made it grow. The wide arcaded square you walk across today is the shape of that privilege: room for stalls down the middle, a church at one end, and the merchants' houses facing in.Na začiatku 14. storočia sa hrad aj s panstvom dostal do rúk Matúša Čáka Trenčianskeho — pána, ktorý až do svojej smrti v roku 1321 vládol väčšine dnešného západného Slovenska vo vlastnom mene a kráľa neuznával. Potom si panstvo vzala koruna späť. V roku 1342 získali Topoľčany práva kráľovského mesta, čo v praxi znamenalo právo držať trhy a spravovať si veci samo — a práve to mesto pozdvihlo.

  3. 1431–14441431 – 1444 Hussites — or notHusiti — alebo nie

In the 1430s Hussite troops from Bohemia were fighting all over this part of the kingdom, and the story told locally is that they held Topoľčany Castle from 1431 to 1434 and gave it back only for a ransom of 9,000 ducats. Historians disagree: research on the castle itself has found no trace of a Hussite garrison there, and some now think the tale belongs to a different fortress. That is worth knowing for its own sake — a good local story and the evidence do not always match, and a student of history has to be able to tell them apart. What is certain is that the region was shaken twice in these same years by earthquakes, in 1443 and again in 1444.V tridsiatych rokoch 15. storočia bojovali husitské vojská z Čiech po celej tejto časti kráľovstva a miestne rozprávanie hovorí, že Topoľčiansky hrad držali v rokoch 1431 – 1434 a vydali ho až za výkupné deväťtisíc dukátov.

  4. 1599 and 16431599 a 1643 Raided from the southVýpady z juhu

After the Ottomans broke the kingdom in 1526 the frontier settled some sixty kilometres south of here — close enough for a raiding party to reach the Nitra valley in a day's ride. In May 1599 the town's right to hold fairs was confirmed; later the same year Ottoman raiders reached Topoľčany and wrecked it. They came again in 1643. Both times people were carried off to be sold as slaves, and that, more than the burning, is why the town stopped growing for a century. Add the fires that repeatedly went through its wooden houses and you have the reason a market town this old has so few old buildings.

  5. 1703–17111703 – 1711 Not the Turks — the emperor's own armyNeboli to Turci, ale cisárske vojsko

People will tell you the castle above Podhradie was destroyed by the Turks. It was not. The damage that finished it as a fortress was done at the beginning of the eighteenth century by imperial troops, during the uprising led by Francis II Rákóczi against the Habsburgs — the last and largest of the Hungarian revolts. The same thing happened to castle after castle in Slovakia: an emperor who had just spent decades taking fortresses back from the Ottomans did not want strongholds that rebels could hold against him. If you have ever wondered why Slovakia has so many ruins on so many ridges, this is most of the answer.Ľudia vám povedia, že hrad nad Podhradím zničili Turci. Nezničili. Škody, po ktorých už nebol pevnosťou, mu na začiatku 18. storočia spôsobilo cisárske vojsko počas povstania Františka II. Rákócziho proti Habsburgovcom — posledného a najväčšieho z uhorských povstaní.

  6. mid-18th centurypolovica 18. storočia Down from the hillDole z kopca

The castle was patched up once more around the middle of the eighteenth century and then abandoned for good — not by siege but by choice. The estate moved its offices down into the valley, to Tovarníky, and the lords went with them, because by then a comfortable manor house among the fields beat a cold stone castle on a ridge. Empty buildings fall down quickly, and this one did. Down in the valley the same century was the opposite story: peace, fairs, guilds, brick houses replacing wooden ones on the square. Prázdne budovy padajú rýchlo a tento hrad nebol výnimkou. Dolu v údolí bolo to isté storočie opačným príbehom: pokoj, jarmoky, cechy, murované domy nahrádzajúce na námestí drevené.

  7. 1867–19181867 – 1918 Beer, and a romantic towerPivo a romantická veža

Under Austria-Hungary Topoľčany became what it still is: a district town living off beer, food and the farms around it. Beer has been brewed here since the nineteenth century and the brewery has been the town's landmark industry ever since. Up on the ridge, the abandoned castle got a second life as scenery — at the end of the century its main tower was rebuilt in a romantic style, as a lookout rather than a defence, the sort of thing rich nineteenth-century families all over Europe did with the ruins they owned. The Stummers of Tovarníky were the last noble family to hold it.Za Rakúsko-Uhorska sa z Topoľčian stalo to, čím sú dodnes: okresné mesto, ktoré žije z piva, potravinárstva a okolitých polí.

The town entered Czechoslovakia in 1918 and soon dropped half of its name: until 1920 it was officially Veľké Topoľčany — Great Topoľčany, Nagytapolcsány in Hungarian — and after that simply Topoľčany. It stayed the seat of a district, with the courts, offices and schools that go with that, and these were the twenty years in which Slovak became the language of public life here. The brewery, the sawmills and the food trade carried the town, and the weekly market on the square still pulled in the villages for miles around.V roku 1918 sa mesto ocitlo v Československu a čoskoro prišlo o polovicu mena: do roku 1920 sa úradne volalo Veľké Topoľčany — po maďarsky Nagytapolcsány — a odvtedy jednoducho Topoľčany.

  9. 1939–19451939 – 1945 The Uprising and the frontPovstanie a front

The uprising that broke out at Banská Bystrica in August 1944 never held this valley, though partisans worked the wooded ridges on both sides of it and German units hunted them there. Topoľčany was taken on 1 April 1945 by soldiers of the First Romanian Army, fighting alongside the Red Army.

  10. since 1989od roku 1989 The town since 1989Mesto od roku 1989

The town itself went on being what it had been: a district seat living on brewing, food processing, engineering and the machinery a farming district needs, with people commuting to Nitra and Partizánske. Its handball club has been one of the better-known clubs in Slovakia for decades, which is not a small thing for a town this size. The square was pedestrianised and its arcaded houses repainted, and the ruin above Podhradie was consolidated — it is now a free walk up through the woods, and the tower the Stummers rebuilt is the view.
