Topoľčany lies in the upper Nitra valley about 30 kilometres north of Nitra, in a corridor between two wooded ranges — the Tribeč to the east, the Považský Inovec to the west. The storyHistória
The town is first recorded in writing in 1173 and grew as the market centre of the surrounding villages, with a royal charter and a weekly fair. Topoľčany Castle, the ruin visible on the ridge to the west above the village of Podhradie, was the seat of the estate that controlled the valley.Mesto sa prvýkrát písomne spomína v roku 1173 a rástlo ako trhové stredisko okolitých dedín, s kráľovskými výsadami a týždenným jarmokom. The Church of the Assumption on the square, Gothic in origin and much altered, is the oldest building in town. Brewing is the trade the town is known for: beer has been made in Topoľčany since the nineteenth century and the brewery is still the local landmark industry.
