In the 1430s Hussite troops from Bohemia were fighting all over this part of the kingdom, and the story told locally is that they held Topoľčany Castle from 1431 to 1434 and gave it back only for a ransom of 9,000 ducats. Historians disagree: research on the castle itself has found no trace of a Hussite garrison there, and some now think the tale belongs to a different fortress. That is worth knowing for its own sake — a good local story and the evidence do not always match, and a student of history has to be able to tell them apart. What is certain is that the region was shaken twice in these same years by earthquakes, in 1443 and again in 1444.V tridsiatych rokoch 15. storočia bojovali husitské vojská z Čiech po celej tejto časti kráľovstva a miestne rozprávanie hovorí, že Topoľčiansky hrad držali v rokoch 1431 – 1434 a vydali ho až za výkupné deväťtisíc dukátov. Historici sa nezhodujú: výskum priamo na hrade nenašiel nijakú stopu po husitskej posádke a časť bádateľov dnes tvrdí, že príbeh patrí inému hradu. Aj to je poučenie samo osebe — pekná miestna povesť a doklady si nemusia sedieť a človek, ktorý sa učí dejepis, musí vedieť jedno od druhého odlíšiť. Isté je, že krajom v tých istých rokoch dvakrát zatriaslo zemetrasenie, v roku 1443 a znovu v roku 1444.
