Once the wars ended the provostry was rebuilt in Baroque style — the church at the head of the square is that rebuilding, with medieval walls still inside it. Then in 1786 Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Premonstratensians throughout Hungary, along with every other order he judged useless to the state; their houses were emptied and their estates taken over. The order was restored in 1802, but by then the balance in Šahy had shifted for good, and in 1806 Hont county chose the town as its permanent seat. From a house of canons to a county courthouse: the centre of gravity moved a couple of hundred metres and stayed there for the next century.Po skončení vojen prepoštstvo barokovo prestavali — kostol na hornom konci námestia je práve táto prestavba, so stredovekým murivom vo vnútri. V roku 1786 potom cisár Jozef II. zrušil premonštrátov v celom Uhorsku spolu so všetkými rehoľami, ktoré považoval za pre štát neužitočné; kláštory vyprázdnili a majetky prevzal štát. Rehoľu obnovili v roku 1802, no v Šahách sa medzitým ťažisko posunulo natrvalo: v roku 1806 si mesto vybrala za svoje stále sídlo Hontianska stolica. Z domu kanonikov na stoličný dom — ťažisko mesta sa presunulo o dvesto metrov a zostalo tam na celé nasledujúce storočie.
