The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie
ŠahyŠahy
In July 1552 the Ottomans stormed Drégely, the small castle on the far bank of the Ipeľ about ten kilometres from here; its captain György Szondi died in the ruins and the whole Ipeľ valley lay open. For most of the next hundred and thirty years Šahy was Ottoman ground — the monastery was fortified and used as a garrison post, the church burned almost to the ground, and the town changed hands more than once during the long war of 1593–1606. After Nové Zámky fell in 1663 the Ottomans made it the capital of a new province, and Šahy became the seat of one of its districts, governed from there until 1685. That is the plain reason so little medieval building survives in the town: not neglect, but a frontier that ran through the middle of it.V júli 1552 Osmani dobyli Drégely, malý hrad na druhom brehu Ipľa asi desať kilometrov odtiaľto; jeho kapitán György Szondi padol v troskách a celé Poiplie zostalo otvorené. Väčšinu nasledujúcich stotridsiatich rokov boli Šahy osmanským územím — kláštor opevnili a využívali ako posádkový bod, kostol takmer do základov vyhorel a mesto počas dlhej vojny v rokoch 1593 – 1606 viackrát zmenilo pána. Keď v roku 1663 padli Nové Zámky, Osmani z nich urobili sídlo novej provincie a Šahy sa stali strediskom jedného z jej okresov, spravovaného odtiaľ až do roku 1685. To je celé vysvetlenie, prečo sa v meste zachovalo tak málo stredovekých stavieb: nie zanedbanie, ale hranica, ktorá viedla priamo cezeň.
